Treatment For Sciatica

Introduction

The Sciatic Nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body. It is formed by the joining of the lumbar and sacral nerve roots. The large nerve that is formed then travels down both legs to innervate muscles, provide sensation and when pinched, produce pain. Sciatica is a word used to describe the severe pain that radiates down one or sometimes both legs. It is caused by irritation or “pinching” at the nerve root in the low back. A “pinched” nerve usually results from some form of trauma. Some examples are motor vehicle accidents, slipping, and fall, sports injuries, pulling a muscle and severe arthritis. It is also very common in people who have desk jobs. People who have to sit for long hours every day can be at risk of developing sciatica. It is associated with back pain; however, it should be kept in mind that back pain is not a symptom of Sciatica. Let’s take a look at some of the symptoms of Sciatica.

Signs & Symptoms of Sciatica

Signs and symptoms of Sciatica are severe pain down the leg all the way to the big toe. In sciatica, you may feel pain and tingling sensation in the hip region, legs, and feet. Symptoms include weakness in these body parts as well. The symptoms for sciatica can last several weeks but if proper care and treatment aren’t initiated, they may linger for longer periods of time. Sciatica is seen in all adolescent and adult age groups.

Treatment For Sciatica

Exercising regularly is a good preventative measure because your low back will be stronger and stable. If you feel symptoms of sciatica coming on, in addition to icing, you can try stretching at home and perform lower body range of motion exercises. If you still don’t feel any reduction in the pain you should consult a doctor. Medical Doctors can prescribe pain relief medication but that will not completely resolve Sciatica. Studies have shown that chiropractic treatment is a non-invasive ideal choice for the treatment of Sciatica. Medical doctors will suggest surgery if the symptoms of Sciatica don’t heal after weeks and weeks of medication. In such a scenario, I highly recommend consulting with an experienced chiropractor before opting for surgery.
